Course description:

Looking for an opportunity to become a facilitator of small group learning in a subject discipline in which you have expertise? This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of Supplemental Instruction (SI) in higher education. Particular focus will be on the history and evolution of SI and the rationale for its use in different university contexts. EDS325H5 course participants will complete a mandatory internship that involves developing and delivering 8-10 peer led study sessions through the Facilitated Study Group (FSG) Program run by the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre. Class work will embed relevant pedagogical tools, resources and research to support the development, delivery and success of FSG sessions. Current research investigating the impact of Supplemental Instruction on student success will also be explored. This is a closed course open only to those students who have successfully secured an FSG leader position with the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre.

Class schedule: L9101 Thursdays 15-17:00 (NOTE: All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Winter 2022. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the University).

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2022 to April 30, 2022

Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I – $8489.67 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $8869.25 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $9085.58 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $9301.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Applicants must have a completed a Ph.D. with demonstrated current knowledge of teaching and its application to pedagogy. Experience teaching this course or a similar course. Experience overseeing facilitated study group student leaders and /or experience with facilitited study groups. Preference will be given to those candidate with demonstrated ability to work with current technology and infuse technology into pedagogical practices.

Description of duties:

Preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs (if any) assigned to the course.
