Job title: Construction – General Labourer
Job description: Labourers are the backbone of the construction industry, and their work is an essential piece of our projects, from towers to tilt-ups. Through combined efforts, physicality, and good listening, labourers move, erect, demolish, dig, clean, cut and carve our projects into existence. Ventana labourers also lead by example, showing outside labour, trade contractors, and even tradespeople how to work safely, cleanly, and consistently on our projects.
Construction Labourers must:
- Be punctual, reliable and engaged.
- Ensure a clean and organized work site.
- Listen carefully and seek clarity on tasks from their direct supervisor whenever required.
- Assist with the protection of the work areas and finished products of others
- Lead by example on all site and Worksafe BC safety guidelines.
- Complete and follow a field-level hazard assessment before completing tasks on site.
- Report all injuries, incidents or unsafe working conditions to their direct supervisor or site HSE coordinator as soon as possible.
- Report public or client concerns to their direct supervisor immediately
- Present a positive image, including: (Communication on site, off site, and on social media, personal presentation – proper Ventana gear, and personal grooming.
- Provide mentorship and guidance on site to New or Young Workers and temporary labour.
Generally, Construction Labourers are physically fit, hard-working, can follow instructions, and have a desire to work with a team. Labourers assist with a wide variety of tasks on the site. Success as a General Labourer can lead to opportunities for progression to roles such as Skilled Labourer, Apprentice Carpenter, Equipment Operator, TCP or Safety Officer. Depending on the project requirements, you may be put forward for safety certifications, such as Fall Protection, Traffic Control, Ground Disturbance Training, Telehandler Operation, Aerial Work Platform Operation, Confined Space Training, Elevator/Hoist Operator Etc.
Typical duties for a Labourer would include the following:
- Clean the site removing debris, and sorting materials and recyclables appropriately. This is a key part of the role of a Labourer. How you tackle the less desirable tasks is a big part of selecting Labourers for training and progression opportunities.
- Unload or load materials from delivery trucks and equipment.
- Move/pack materials into place for tradespeople or skilled labourers.
- Hand dig trenches, holes, pits, ditches, clean-cut footings, etc.
- Prepare tools and equipment and ensure they are distributed to the site as needed
- Drill, cut, or operate demolition hammers or saws as directed on site.
- Build/construct scaffolding systems with direction.
- Mix or prepare cementitious materials.
- Construction and demolition activities as directed.
- Maintain site fencing and keep site perimeters clean and safe.
- Water control, including pumping, drain maintenance, berms, and basin cleanout as required.
- Site heaters, fans, and general ventilation set up and maintenance on site.
- Assist site team with activities as directed on site.
- Assist with Carpentry tasks and learn to use basic hand and power tools.
Requirements
- Be physically capable of meeting the job demands, including working on your feet for 8 hours or more, lifting objects weighing up to 55lbs, and carrying out physical tasks over extended periods.
- Drivers Licence and access to a vehicle considered an asset.
- Valid Safety Tickets are considered an asset.
- Basic carpentry skills are considered an asset.
- Construction experience of 1 year or more is an asset, but all experience levels will be considered.
