The University of British Columbia (UBC) is Canada’s third largest university and consistently ranks among the 40 best universities in the world. Primarily situated in Vancouver, UBC is a research-intensive university and has an economic impact of $4 billion to the provincial economy.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a mixed surgical/medical unit that includes an active cardiac program, including ECMO and neurosurgical intensive care. There are over 1200 admissions annually. The PICU is a state-of-the-art 28-bed unit located within the Teck Acute Care Centre. As a leader in the field and a member of the dedicated team of critical care specialists, your prime responsibility will be direct clinical patient care of critically ill children in the PICU. Consultations on children in the Emergency Department and inpatient modules, advice to physicians in the community, support of families and coordination of transport of critically ill children within BC and beyond are essential components of the position.
The successful candidate will work actively to encourage a culture of teamwork, collaboration and respect within the entire healthcare team. You will actively work to promote patient safety including participating in the Divisional Patient Safety Quality & Improvement Programs. BCCH hosts the longest-standing PICU fellowship program in Canada and has a proud tradition of training future Pediatric Intensivists. In addition, you will mentor and teach Undergraduates and Resident staff (Pediatrics, Emergency and Anesthesiology) in the ICU.
You will be expected to promote collaborative research in Pediatric Intensive Care and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in clinical and scientific research in a relevant field. Formal training in this regard, for example work towards a higher degree (PhD), would be an advantage.
In addition to base specialty training in pediatrics, anesthesia or surgery, successful applicants will have completed training in an accredited pediatric critical care specialty-training program. The experience you possess in managing critically ill children will ensure your success in this rewarding role. Applicants are also expected to have PALS and ATLS, or equivalent, certifications. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in British Columbia as well as eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
