About Our Opportunity

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) provides innovative programming and learning opportunities for Nova Scotia residents and visitors to the province. The Art Education Assistant will assume an important planning and coordination role to help meet the objectives and goals in the programming division. We will work together to find new and creative ways to deliver meaningful, inspiring yet safe art experiences for children, youth, adults and special interest groups, during the 2021 summer season.

The Art Education Assistant will assist in developing and delivering interactive programs and activities using numerous delivery models, including in-person when possible and virtually.

This position reports to the Public Program Specialist.

Primary Responsiblities

  • Research and review the permanent collection and exhibitions presently on view and upcoming
  • Assist with content generation for online videos of hands-on art activities, the development of Art Kits, and on-site activities.
  • Assist with adaptations to the studio with new social distancing practice, studio maintenance, restocking, and organization
  • Assist with development of public program planning for upcoming fall and winter exhibitions
  • Assist with Summer School of the Arts day camp program, greet children/parents at the beginning and end of each day, assist with supervision, and aid students and instructors as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful for this position you must be enrolled in a university, post-secondary institution, and must be returning to study in September 2021. Must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (https://young-canada-works.canada.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program. Students enrolled in Fine Arts, Art History, Art Education or Museum Studies or related field such as Community Development, or an equivalent combination of experience will be considered. You have demonstrated experience working with children, youth, and adults in the arts.

You have good communication (written and verbal), organizational skills, and computer proficiency with common software such as Microsoft (Word and Excel) and email, web research experience and using online social media platforms. You have good interpersonal and problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and with a variety of community partners and members of the public. At times may work independently or in a team environment and must clearly demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics to work effectively with the diverse public in a professional manner that visits the museum.

Working Conditions

Please note: Plans for the visitors to attend programs on-site is uncertain at the time of this posting, when applying your cover letter must demonstrate your interest, competency and comfort with technology working virtually with the AGNS team and with online programming.

Successful candidate must be available for the entire season and not planning travel requiring 14-day quarantine.
