Overview
Surrey Libraries invites applications for the positions of casual Youth Services or Information Services Technicians. We are recruiting bright, energetic, and enthusiastic applicants to work on-call in all ten of our locations. As a Technician, you aim to create an exceptional customer experience. Technicians provide reference, reader’s advisory, assistance with information and technology as well as programming services to people of all ages. Other duties include community outreach, library collection maintenance, and statistics reporting and compiling.
Hours of work vary, and most shifts will be on Saturdays, Sundays and weekday evenings. This is an on-call casual position, working up to 35 hours per week. We are currently in the midst of a service model change; additional training will be provided.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
- Diploma in Library Technology from a recognized Library Technician’s program, or an equivalent combination of directly related work experience, training and courses
- Accurate keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute
- 1 to 2 years working experience providing customer service in a public service environment
- Knowledge of Library’s policies and operations
- Knowledge of library resources and collection, as related to the work performed
- Knowledge of programming techniques and materials
- Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications related to the work performed
- Ability to communicate effectively, spoken and written
- Ability to serve the public courteously and effectively and maintain good working relationships with other staff
- Ability to meet physical demands of the work including safe handling of materials
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment
- Oral fluency in Asian or South Asian languages is an asset
