Job description: We are currently seeking an experienced, dynamic, innovative and creative Communications & Marketing Manager to drive and oversee all aspects of planning, developing, delivering, and evaluating strategic communications and digital activities for the gallery.

Type of Employment: Full time, 35 hours per week

Summary of Function:
The Communications and Marketing Manager will be responsible for all aspects of planning, developing, delivering, and evaluating strategic communications and digital activities for TPP. Working closely with the Director and senior management team, this is a key position in the implementation of the gallery’s Marketing, Communication, and Development strategies to develop and maintain TPP’s mission and performance targets, as well as TPP’s role as Canada’s leading contemporary art gallery that is recognised internationally as a centre of excellence. This is a manager position that involves both high-level strategy, execution and oversight of one or more team members, as well as working with outside contractors.
Duties:
Marketing & Communications Activities
- Develop branding and marketing strategies for The Power Plant and its programs, products, and services and oversee the implementation of these strategies, ensuring a high level of awareness of the brand values among stakeholder groups nationally and internationally.
- Develop communications strategies, including institutional and program-specific strategies, to ensure the gallery and its programs are effectively communicated and promoted to diverse audiences and groups.
- Develop and implement communication strategies to maximize all revenue sources including earned revenue, ticket sales, wholesale and retail services, venue rentals and special events, corporate sponsorship, membership and individual giving, and government and foundation grants. Ensure plans are in place and coordinate their implementation. Prepare written evaluations, final reports, and financial reconciliations.
- Develop and implement partner development marketing and communications strategies aimed at growing the social and cultural relevance of the gallery and advocacy and support for its programs nationally and internationally.
- Implement a new Digital Media Strategy as well as manage the website and other electronic communications and implement strategies to ensure targets are met.
- Lead all press and public relations actions to promote the gallery’s brand development, the exhibitions and public program as well as all events linked with TPP.
- Issue/Crisis Management: Monitor mainstream media and on-line sources, and develop communications plans and briefing materials to manage relevant issues affecting TPP’s reputation, business and/or strategic direction. Ensure a crisis management process is in place and aligns with risk management procedures as defined by TPP and Harbourfront Centre.
- Ensure that TPP’s diversity and inclusion aims and objectives are at the forefront of the communications strategies and campaigns.
Project Management, Stakeholder Management & Production
- Be an active member of the management team and contribute to the gallery’s organizational leadership, strategic planning, and review.
- Manage the production of Development & Marketing publications and collateral, compile copy, and negotiate media buys, coordinate print processes to ensure targets and deadlines are met.
- Manage suppliers and maintain good relationships with printers, photographers, and designers, etc. to ensure delivery to deadlines, within budget and to the appropriate quality.
- Act as a spokesperson for the gallery.
- Manage sponsorship contracts, agreements and fulfillment plans. Establish and nurture positive relationships with stakeholders, sponsors, partners, donors, and foundations.
Staff Management
- Supervise the activities of the Marketing & Communications Outreach Assistant. Supervision includes assignment of work with a keen eye to monitoring project status and timelines, aiding and coaching, evaluating and managing performance.
- Build a team of members who are independent thinkers, high performers, and proactive planners. Clarify goals, manage performance, and encourage leadership in all team members.
Administrative & Financial Activities
- Keep current on marketing trends and tactics. Liaise with other departments and organizations of a similar nature.
- Measure results and evaluate effectiveness of the marketing plan for each program and project upon completion, using both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Requirements: Essential Criteria
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree with major course work in business, marketing, communications, public relations, or the equivalent experience.
- Track record of success with at least 5-7 years or more of senior level marketing and communications experience.
- Experience with website content management, social media, and digital marketing.
- Knowledge of and experience implementing strategic communications and marketing concepts.
- Experience with analytic reporting tools and reporting metrics.
- Proven experience in sponsorship, customer service, communications, and marketing in the private sector as well as experience with government and foundation granting procedures and individual giving and membership campaigns is required.
- A strategic, creative, and innovative thinker with problem-solving skills and constant desire to improve existing processes or develop new ones.
- Must possess excellent writing and presentation skills, and exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to develop effective partnerships, as well as to persuade and negotiate.
- Capable of developing staff abilities, of motivating and inspiring staff to explore innovative options and techniques, and of inspiring confidence in the Marketing department. Must have managed a team.
- Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to work with a variety of individuals and teams across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly to a range of stakeholders and people on all levels, in writing and verbally.
- Must be organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Must be computer literate with excellent word processing skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in a visual arts organization coupled with an interest in not-profit organizational model are assets. An in-depth knowledge of contemporary art.
- Experience of initiating and developing successful and sustainable partnerships and collaborations.
- Experience of working with a range of contacts, organizations, and institutions, in academic, media and publishing circles and within the visual arts and cultural sector.
- Accreditation with International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is an asset.
- The knowledge and understanding of French is an asset.
