Responsibilities

The Community Mental Health Nurse to provide nursing services, including mental health assessment, crisis intervention and community outreach to designated patients of Mental Health & Addictions as part of the Community Outreach Team. Reporting to the Manager, Inpatient – Mental Health & Addictions and under the clinical supervision of the Head Clinician, the nurse will assist patients/families to become engaged with the formal mental health & addictions system and connect with appropriate follow-up services. This may involve patient and family education about mental health & substance use disorders and their treatment. Local travel and home visiting are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia
  • Minimum three (3) years clinical experience in an inpatient/outpatient setting, providing assessment and treatment of adolescent and adult mental health & substance use disorders
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with psychotropic medication.
  • Experience in risk assessments
  • Experience in providing home visits and community based crisis intervention.
  • Evidence of ability to work independently, with a multidisciplinary team as well as with both hospital and community based services/agencies.
  • Demonstrated use of innovative problem solving and application of evidence based practice to patient services.
  • Experience and ability to provide mental health training and education sessions
  • Flexibility in work schedule and hours is required to accommodate the needs of patients and their families.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work

Permanent full-time (100%) position; 75.00 hours bi-weekly.

Travel will be required, must have access to reliable vehicle.

Salary Information

Community Mental Health Nurse (RN3):

$36.13 – $42.44 hourly

($43.92 with 25 years RN experience).
