About Us

Adult Education is a division within the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. The Adult Education Division is dedicated to improving the education and employment prospects of Nova Scotia’s adults by funding, developing, and coordinating adult educational programs and services, promoting family literacy, and supporting the recognition of international qualifications and fair labour mobility practices.

The division coordinates the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning, administers the General Education Development (GED) testing program, supports capacity-building through the RPL funding program and International Qualification Recognition program, and ensures fair labour mobility practices through the administration of the Fair Registration Practices Act and implementation of the Labour Mobility Chapter of the Canada Free Trade Agreement.

About Our Opportunity

The Education Officer 3 (Math Science and Technology) is responsible for the development, design and implementation of curricula and professional development activities to support the programs and services of the Adult Education division, including the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning (NSSAL).

In addition, the Education Officer may be asked to provide advisory services to all divisions of the Skills and Learning Branch, school boards, community-based learning organizations, post-secondary institutions, and other education partners.

This position reports to the Manager, Curriculum and Program Development.

Primary Accountabilities

The Education Officer is responsible for all aspects of the creation of curricula including:

• researching adult literacy and secondary education curricula;
• writing curricula and coordinating output with other curriculum developers;
• developing, designing, and delivering professional development workshops and adult education-related training for practitioners in community-based and institutional adult programs;
• participating on project teams for Adult Education Division initiatives and for stakeholder organizations;
• tracing emerging issues in the field of adult education;
• writing and reviewing curriculum related proposals; and
• identifying and evaluating and/or developing appropriate instructor resources to support curricula and divisional activities.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate you have a Masters’ degree in Education, and a Level 6 Teaching Certificate (or an equivalent Teacher Certification), plus eight (8) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

You have demonstrated expert knowledge in the areas of math, science and technology, and experience in the development of curricula at the secondary level. You also have extensive knowledge in instructional design principles, adult learning practices and principles, and the education delivery and accreditation systems at both the secondary and post-secondary levels in Nova Scotia.

You are proficient in using computer applications (Microsoft Office programs, Internet etc.), and experience with e-Learning, blended learning and online course delivery is required. Above average organizational and time management skills are essential as are excellent interpersonal skills, facilitation skills, and team-building skills. Proven ability to manage constructive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and the ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgement is required. At times you may be required to work independently, and in team environments applying the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion to all areas of your work and will support your colleagues to do the same.

Experience in project management (tracking and maintaining data) is required.

Assets for this position include:

• Experience working with students who have learning disabilities, and knowledge of appropriate interventions
• Bilingualism (English/French)

Pay Grade: PR 20

Salary Range: $3,272.23 – $3,852.79 Bi-Weekly
