The Director Benefits will lead all day-to-day activities pertaining to Chartwell’s unionized and non-unionized Group Benefits and Retirement programs. This includes but is not limited to group health and retirement plans across all the residences in the organization and the corporate office. The Director of Benefits will lead the Benefits team using an in-house Benefits Administration system and work in partnership with the organization’s leaders to effectively manage and implement benefits and retirement offerings that will maximize employee engagement. This role will also be responsible to provide people leadership to a team of Benefits Administrators and Specialists and ensuring the in-house Benefits Administration system is kept current.

Key Accountabilities

  • Direct administration activities of 300+ group benefit plans and 100+ retirement plans.
  • Provide training and education of processes to all stakeholders in the residences and corporate office to ensure timely and accurate enrollments of eligible employees and disenrollment of terminated employees within the organization.
  • Oversee all Group Benefit and Retirement program changes or new plans are accurately configured in Fusion HCM in a timely manner so that the system is kept current.
  • Ensure all annual benefits rate changes are accurately updated in Fusion HCM.
  • Ensure optimization of benefits functionality within Fusion HCM.
  • Work in partnership with the Senior Director of Health and Safety to ensure accurate benefits management per Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) for employees on Occupational Health and Safety leave.
  • Ensure the effective execution and communication of benefits plans and programs within Chartwell’s customer service model.
  • Develop and advance process capability of all benefits and retirement administration through continuous improvement.
  • Oversee all compliance activity ensuring plan audits and filings are completed accurately and timely, by identifying and correcting issues or trends that may negatively impact the financial and operational integrity of the plans.
  • Provide plan interpretation guidance and serve as a benefit subject matter expert to the organization.
  • Responsible for the ongoing review, evaluation and updating benefit procedures and test controls.
  • Provide full staff leadership and management, including performance development and coaching, to the Benefits team.
  • Partner with leadership teams to identify and address current and emerging benefits trends and issues.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc/BA) in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Organizational Development.
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) a strong plus.

Experience

  • Experience:10+ years of related benefits experience.
  • 5+ years people leadership experience.
  • Experience in implementation of an HRIS or Benefits Administration system.
  • A deep understanding, developed through experience, of the Benefits landscape.

  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with a proven ability to communicate including the ability to explain, influence, listen, instruct, give clear feedback, and ask good questions
  • A proven track record of building and developing a highly motivated and competent team capable of effectively supporting the organization

  • Very strong results-orientation, follow-up and attention to detail
  • A process improvement mindset and strong planning capabilities.
  • Possesses excellent business acumen and judgment with the ability to juggle numerous projects simultaneously
  • A creative problem-solver with the ability to make sound decisions based on facts
  • Must be extremely organized, self-motivated and capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment while managing shifting priorities
  • Strong math, problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to be hands-on and comfortable with tactical execution.
