What You’ll Be Doing
The Capital Markets arm of CIBC provides corporate, government and institutional clients with innovative solutions to help them raise capital, and grow and invest actively throughout North America, Latin America, and key financial centres around the world. To deliver on its vision to be our clients’ preferred capital markets banking partner across multiple products and services, both in Canada and where our core competencies can be exported in the Americas. The Capital Markets mission is to bring Canadian Capital Markets products to Canada and the rest of the world, and also bring the world to Canada.
The Director, Fund Finance position is responsible for undertaking due diligence and administration of a portfolio of Non-Bank Financial Institutions / Private Capital clients, many of which represent high profile relationships of CIBC. You will participate in the origination, structuring and execution of fund finance transactions in collaboration with CIBC Capital Markets partners across multiple regions including Canada, United States and UK/Europe.
You will work closely with the Executive Director (ED), Fund Finance, Risk Management, and other Capital Markets client coverage partners. Job responsibilities would include completing credit, financial and documentation due diligence per the Bank’s lending guidelines and risk policies, preparing credit submissions, co-presenting prospective transactions to the Global Deals Committee, and supporting the transaction closing process.
You will coordinate and work with multiple partners across regions and functional areas including Credit Processing, Loan Operations, Legal, Risk Management and Business Management.
You will develop a personal profile within the firm and assist in maintaining a high profile for the firm within and outside the financial community.
You will provide leadership to Associates/Analysts, and contribute fresh perspectives to the team.
You must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete work assignments.

Act as the Corporate Banking portfolio manager for these accounts and assist the ED in building relationships with clients in order to understand their fund finance and overall banking requirements and anticipate future needs for CIBC capital markets products and services.
Assist the ED in originating, structuring and executing fund finance transactions. Support the development of new / existing client relationships that result in new fund finance loan commitments consistent with the strategic plan.
Undertake the underwriting of fund finance facilities in accordance with lending guidelines and risk policies for this business. Analyze complex transactions and fund structures which involves detailed analysis in order to identify possible risks to the Bank.
Have a well-developed understanding of risks inherent in fund finance facilities including Subscription Finance credit facilities, Hybrid and NAV-based facilities as well as knowledge of due diligence reviews on borrowing bases, fund structures, Limited Partnership Agreements, Side Letters and other relevant fund / investor documentation.
Ensure that the credit quality of each borrower/counterparty in a portfolio is appropriately assessed, seeking to accurately evaluate risk profiles and proactively identify any changes to that profile caused by evolving credit factors (i.e. borrower specific, economic, market, industry, legal). Appropriately manage the portfolio, with a focus on compliance with terms and conditions of each credit, as well as strict compliance with internal procedures and guidelines.
Assist in preparation of various marketing materials including pitch decks and transaction proposals. Participate in client meetings and complete detailed call reports for circulation to senior management and Capital Markets partners across the Bank.
Coordinating the input and activities of many parties, including internal teams such as Credit Processing, KYC/AML, Risk Management, Audit and Business Management.
Responsible for various reporting functions with respect to the assigned portfolio. Assist with adhoc projects as assigned including market reviews, strategy papers and internal reporting for senior management.
Coach and provide oversight to Associates/Analysts who are conducting financial and credit analysis, risk-ratings, and credit recommendations.
Ensure that recommendations and opinions offered to clients are in compliance with legislation, are of the highest professional standards and that they reflect the judgment of the firm. Be familiar with appropriate due diligence criteria and effectively conduct such analysis and enquiry investigation to provide CIBC Capital Markets with an appropriate “due diligence” defense under applicable securities legislation.
Assist in the development of credit policy and risk management standards, procedures and processes for the fund finance program.

Industry Experience. Demonstrated experience in the origination, structuring and execution of fund finance transactions required; Position may be filled at the Associate or Director level based on background and experience of the successful candidate. MBA, CFA or other relevant professional designation required.
Knowledge. Ability to understand existing and potential clients’ needs sufficient to recommend appropriate fund finance solutions and transaction structures given the state of credit markets and the credit quality assessment of the client. Well-developed knowledge of lending analysis for Funds. Experience in preparing and analyzing complex credit applications/proposals. Excellent understanding of financial statements and accounting principles.
Effective communicator. Excellent presentation skills evidenced by ability to be a focused, confident and persuasive presenter. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Good relationship building capabilities for internal and external audiences.
Technical. Knowledge of multiple software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. You use your detail-orientation to ensure analysis and advice is accurate and thorough.
Collaborative and professional. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
