Reporting to the President, The Director of People and Culture you are responsible for making a significant contribution to the performance and development of the company by designing and implementing people-centric practices which improve employee experience, guest engagement, exceptional service, innovation and profit performance. The role oversees all aspects of P&C functions, from attraction, recruitment, onboarding, growth, experience, employee relations, and engagement. The Director of P&C should be knowledgeable of the laws and policies in the provincial jurisdictions in which they operate to ensure that the business is legally compliant at all levels of people centricity.
The Director, People and Culture’s purpose is to:
- Develop the People and Culture function through assessment, development and training and close liaison with business managers such that the function performs to the highest standards, fully meeting the requirements of the hotels.
- To assist the key executive team to develop organizational strategic plans which meet the current and future needs of the business a consumer market.
- Liaise with ownership and executive team to identify mission-critical roles and develop succession plans which cater to the current and future requirements of the business. Ensure that internal candidates are identified and developed appropriately and that contingency arrangement is in place to recruit externally or manage internally in an interim manner. In parallel ensure that appropriate policies are in place to facilitate timely retirement and exiting when appropriate.
- Partner with operators to embed core values and key behaviours into the DNA of each of the hotels in ways that build a unique culture at the same time as preserving the individuality of each property and the local community culture.
- Partner with GMs to ensure all people strategies are realized within the properties, aligned to brand standards, culture and guest-centric strategies.
- Partner with management teams and HR department to design and implement a ‘leadership talent development system’ that identifies high potential leadership talent across all hotels.
Essential Functions:

- Provide direction and provide effective leadership with the P&C teams to maximize individual and team potential and develop future capability.
- Inspire exceptional team performance and mentor managers and team members across all areas of the business.
- Build P&C team capability, knowledge, and resources to meet long term business goals
- To develop and oversee the effective operational execution of policy, strategy, and systems to become the “Employer of Choice” to attract, retain and develop top talent
- Define and direct People and Culture policy and translate this into employment terms and operational realities.
- Build and implement an organizational development strategy to create an agile organization
- Set direction and oversee the implementation of the talent management strategy
- Develop and deploy effective People and Culture tools to empower managers and team members
- Ensure compliance with all Provincial and Federal laws and regulations which pertain to Human Resources by reviewing current management practices, implementing new procedures and communicating verbally and in writing any new requirements.
- Provide assistance, guidance and counselling to the General Manager, management staff and associates to maximize the quality and professionalism of the hotel staff by listening and interpreting concerns and objectives and seeking solutions.
- Control the administration of wages and benefits in accordance with established Collective Agreements to ensure the accurate and equitable application of same.
- Manage all labour relations activities by administering union contracts and ensuring compliance. Ensure that all seniority lists and reporting requirements are handled efficiently and within established timelines in the Collective Agreements. Respond to all grievances in writing, and participate in positive labour relations with hotel leadership and unions.
- Troubleshoot and provide guidance to operational managers to manage complex performance and disciplinary issues
- Accountability for day-to-day HR cost centres in all areas of People and Culture
- To oversee the development and execution of an internal communication strategy to engage employees behind the hotel’s vision, values, service, and operational goals
- Develop creative solutions to enhance hotel-wide communications
- Develop compensation, benefits and total rewards strategies
- Design and deploy an effective document management system to drive operational consistency and improvement of standards e.g., policy, procedures, guidelines
- To build long term people strategies to maximize the hotel’s flexibility, build talent; capability and capacity to meet future business demands and enhance the brands
- Anticipate future P&C and employment trends and align the P&C offering
- To act as a key spokesperson for P&C to achieve the hotel’s vision and enhance a positive brand image – with internal and external stakeholders
- Design and lead cross-departmental and companywide meetings and conferences.
Requirements
The Director of People and Culture should have experience and proven success in these areas:
- You have experience leading the HR practices in a multi-unit, high-volume environment within the hospitality, resort, or foodservice sectors with a sizable managerial and hourly workforce in both a union and non-unionized setting.
- You are an exceptional people and culture leader who has supported growth, expansion and the development of a strong, positive and engaged culture involving employees in multiple geographies in roles ranging from field staff to senior management.
- You have proven success creating and implementing an HR strategy and best practices that enable an organization to effectively scale and meet its ambitious growth plans through innovative talent management practices.
- You have empathy and an unwavering ability to work across a spectrum of different cultures – your vision and initiatives should contribute to the hotels complementing each other, resulting in a unified brand that delivers on its vision and values.
- You are comfortable playing both a strategic role in the formulation of the HR strategy, as well as a tactical role overseeing a team in the implementation of programs and projects
- You have experience in compensation, benefits and total rewards development and roll-out.
- You’re a progressive leader with strong collaboration skills, can build trusting relationships and have strong ethics and values-based decision-making skills
