Job description: Applications are invited for the positions of Temporary District Indigenous Education Assistant, with the locations to be assigned based on student and school needs, for the weekly hours indicated, while school is in session, effective as soon as possible after the posting closes and for the balance of the 2020/2021 school year.

Indigenous Education Assistants work in a variety of school and community settings under the direction of a certificated teacher.

RESPONSIBILITIES include assisting in any of the following:

  • Implementation of a student’s individual educational plan;
  • Implementation of a personal care plan for physically or mentally challenged students including but not limited to: toileting and/or catheterization, mobility training, lifting, seizure management, feeding, personal hygiene and supervision of medication;
  • Implementation of behavioural management plans;
  • The social, vocational, and academic training of individuals or groups;
  • Materials preparation;
  • Transportation of students to various program activities;
  • Protecting and respecting the confidentiality of information; and,
  • Implementation of school and District Indigenous programs and initiatives to improve attendance and family involvement.

QUALIFICATIONS will include a two-year post-secondary diploma in Special Education (or relevant discipline) or an equivalent combination of relevant education (minimum one year) and experience.

The successful applicant will possess the following SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent reading, writing and verbal communications skills;
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of strategies to work successfully with students with mental and/or physical challenges, learning disabilities and behaviour disorders;
  • Ability to work harmoniously as a member of an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and para- professionals;
  • Computer literacy and experience with technological assists such as Kurzweill, Minspeak and Dragon Naturally Speaking;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with Indigenous organizations;
  • Demonstrated practical ability to interact in an Indigenous language is preferred;
  • A practical knowledge of Indigenous protocols and demonstrated understanding of Indigenous culture, and
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement first peoples’ principles of learning.

The successful applicant may be required to demonstrate that he/she is capable of performing the physical requirements of the position and to certify that she/he has no known pre-existing medical conditions, which would prevent him/her from performing his/her duties.

The rate of pay for this position is $26.35 per hour, in accordance with the current Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 723. Hours of work will be determined by the needs of the student or students.
