Role

Reporting to the Compliance Assurance Lead, you will perform regulatory tasks regarding the actions of industrial operations, municipalities and members of the public to ensure Alberta’s environment and public health are not at risk. Working within Alberta’s environmental legislation, you will take a solutions-oriented approach in addressing and managing environmental issues. You will provide direction and take steps to enforce legislation through education, prevention and enforcement approaches. This position will assess and respond to environmental incidents, including public complaints, collect evidence to determine if a contravention has occurred and conduct proactive and reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance. This position will perform regulatory compliance activities in regulated sectors such as drinking water contaminated sites, industrial and municipal sectors. Experience in these regulated sectors is considered an asset.

Working as part of the Compliance Team as an Environmental Protection Officer, you will apply the principles of Education, Prevention and Enforcement in the compliance assurance framework to achieve compliance with the legislation within the Ministry’s mandate. As an Environmental Protection Officer, you will perform regulatory compliance activities on a wide variety of environmental issues to ensure the health and prosperity of Albertans and their environment.

You will be act as an Emergency Regional Responder serving on an on-call rotational basis expected to receive, prioritize and respond to environmental emergencies

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience for this role:

  • A two-year technical diploma in a related field (preferably environmental sciences with enforcement/compliance background).
  • Minimum six years of directly related experience.
  • Experience in regulatory inspection and/or investigation processes and techniques are required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites is essential.

Assets for the role include:

  • Experience in the direct application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act and Public Lands Act is preferred.
  • Candidates with technical background or practical experience related to drinking water/wastewater systems, contaminated sites, environmental sciences, water management, and related disciplines is preferred

Equivalencies will be considered.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at lower classification and salary.

Salary

$2,621.67 to $3,442.53 bi-weekly ($68,425 to $89,850 annually)
