This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.
Responsibilities
The Cancer Registrar provides health information management expertise in the collection of clinical & health status data for the provincial Cancer Registry Information System (CRIS). The Registrar reviews, analyses and interprets a wide range of data types from various reports (e.g. radiology/laboratory, physician consult records, etc.), and from multiple sources (e.g. medical records, clinical information systems, death records etc.) to classify and stage the primary tumour and create standardized datasets for cancer cases diagnosed and managed in Nova Scotia.
The Registrar must understand and apply complex definitions and rule sets for abstracting information. The Registrar collects, analyzes and interprets data throughout the patient’s life span starting with diagnosis. He/she must ensure periodic review and update of health status, treatment activity and outcomes at defined intervals.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 plus successful completion of a recognized Health Information Management Certificate Program
- Certification with Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) Certification is preferred
- Experience with coding and classification systems (e.g. ICD-O, ICD10), cancer coding preferred
- Knowledge of national and provincial legislation and NSH policies that govern health information (e.g. Nova Scotia Personal Health Information Act – PHIA)
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated planning, organizing, prioritizing and time management skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills including ability to work as a team member
- Demonstrated accountability, initiative and ability to work independently
- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking, synthesize information, problem solve and utilize good judgment in decision making
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality; recognize sensitive issues and respond appropriately
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred
Hours of Work
- Permanent Full-time Position; 75 hours bi-weekly
Salary Information
$25.5235 – $27.4289 hourly
