Position: Humane Education Manager, AnimalSmart™
Status: Full Time 40 hours per week
Location: Provincial Office, Stouffville ON

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial educator to join the AnimalSmart™ humane education team. Reporting to the Senior Director, Affiliate & Community Outreach, the Manager, AnimalSmart™ works as an integral member of the Humane Programs & Community Outreach leadership team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and expands the AnimalSmart™ program, reflecting the needs of the audiences and in an inclusive fashion;
  • Develops new curricula and educational materials to foster compassion and respect for animals through research and collaboration with educators and consultants. These resources will be geared primarily toward educators, students and families;
  • Seeks opportunities to develop relationships to promote AnimalSmart™ within the education system, community organizations, youth clubs, etc.;
  • Develops an AnimalSmart™ educator advisory group, including the creation of a supporting plan that focuses on value-to-educators, student engagement and promotion of humane education in schools;
  • Manages, plans and executes PA day offerings for educators;
  • Manages the development of content for the AnimalSmart™ website, including engaging and creative learning materials;
  • Creates content for promotional materials, delivered through a variety of mediums (social media, newsletters, website, videos, presentations, manuals, etc.);
  • Leads the planning and delivery of the AnimalSmart™ Conference;
  • Develops and fosters relationships within the humane education field and represents the organization at educational and outreach events;
  • Develops and delivers educational presentations to a wide variety of learners and groups, including academic, educational, those in the community, and industry audiences of varying ages and backgrounds;
  • Actively contributes to an environment that is inclusive and encourages communication, collaboration and engagement with all parties.
  • Remains current with the evolving educational industry including trends, pedagogy, learning strategies and technology

QUALIFICATIONS AND ASSETS

  • Post-secondary degree in education or related discipline;
  • Experience as a primary grade teacher in a classroom and/or online is an asset;
  • Understanding of humane education principles
  • Knowledge of both child learning and adult learning principles
  • A professional who is self-motivated, able to initiate, develop and execute projects at a management level – working effectively both independently and as a member of the team;
  • Skilled and experienced in curriculum development, lesson planning, and presentation;
  • Knowledge of teaching methods to both meet the needs of educators and accommodate students’ varied learning processes;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to author/edit educational materials and to speak confidently in public;
  • Creative thinker, passionate about improving the lives of animals and people through education and engagement;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills essential to building partnerships with educators, schools and community organizations;
  • Adept at making and maintaining new connections and identifying shared goals;
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to simultaneously address both strategic and operational initiatives;
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are fluent in French and/or who have experience working with Indigenous Peoples;
  • Understanding of and alignment with the Mission, Vision and Goals of the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society;
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License with availability to travel throughout Ontario and clear Police Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector screening.
