The Junior Teaching Orthoptist, under general supervision, provides education to orthoptic students and residents in areas such as ophthalmology theory, technical procedures and test interpretation. The orthoptist conducts various orthoptic tests such as Randot Stereo Test and Prism Cover Test; analyzes test results and formulates a differential diagnosis for submission to the referring physician.

What you’ll do

• Provide education to students, ophthalmology residents and pediatric ophthalmology fellows by attending rounds and presenting case examples to students/residents/fellows, provide lectures in areas of orthoptic theory, demonstrating technical procedures and interpreting orthoptic tests.
• Oversee and participate in the evaluation of orthoptic students, ensuring completion of education requirements and achievement of competencies in preparation for certification exams.
• Conduct various orthoptic tests such as: stereo acuity tests, prism cover test, Synoptophore and Hess chart as requested by BC Children’s and community based Ophthalmologists, analyze results, formulate diagnosis and document information by completing an Orthoptic Report for referring ophthalmologists.
• Consult with the ophthalmologist regarding findings and treatments as required.
• Perform visual field testing on pediatric patients as requested by BC Children’s and community based Ophthalmologists and prepare diagnostic results.
• Triage referrals received by the Orthoptic Clinic from community based ophthalmologists.
• Assist in booking outpatient appointments upon receiving ophthalmologist requests and make follow-up appointments with patients for treatments such as patching, Fresnel prisms and eye exercises.
• Complete documentation on patients seen and services performed for hospital billing through submission to the PHSA Accounting Department.

What you bring

• Certification by the Canadian Orthoptic Council and member of The Canadian Orthoptic Society, or American Orthoptic Council.
• Three (3) years recent experience as a practising orthoptist including one year teaching experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• CPR Training – Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) – Level I.

Wage: $33.13 to $41.43 per hour

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday; 08:00 – 16:00, 8:30 – 16:30
