Reporting to the Manager, Aquatic Sciences and working closely with the Senior Leads on the team, the Lead is accountable for work on projects to assess and support the ongoing management and compliance of regional and local permits associated with our coal mining operations. The position requires specialized scientific knowledge, technical skills, and project management experience. This is a temporary 14 month position, with the potential opportunity for extension in the future.

To be successful, we are looking for someone with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and who can coordinate the efforts of others to accomplish objectives. This role requires an inventive thinker with creative problem solving and decision making abilities. Lastly, we need someone who will thrive in a fast-paced environment with minimal direction, but who also works well collaborating with a team.

You will have the opportunity to work on innovative aquatic effects assessments to understand changes in water quality and physical habitat. Some field work in remote locations and in inclement weather conditions may be required. Working with leading scientists in aquatic ecology, you will tackle complex and sophisticated projects and present this information to a wide range of internal and external audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Design, implement, and manage technically sophisticated biological and physicochemical monitoring programs, including the collection of chemical, physical, and biological data
  • Provide technical review of study designs and reports associated with aquatic monitoring programs
  • Support Teck’s mining operations throughout the Elk Valley by helping to evaluate any changes in the aquatic environment and proving recommendations for adaptive management
  • Work closely with the Water Quality Management team during the implementation of water treatment and calcite management to improve aquatic health in the valley
  • Coordinate with internal and external specialists to address highly complex environmental science issues
  • Supervise field investigations, inspections, and audits with the support of coordinators and technicians
  • Oversee contractors to confirm work is being conducted in accordance with the project scope and health and safety requirements
  • Manage large data sets and complex program budgets
  • Collaborate closely with partners through the Environmental Monitoring and Elk Valley Fish and Fish Habitat Committees

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Ecology, Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, or related field
  • Minimum five years of demonstrated ability in the field of environmental compliance or monitoring specific to mining
  • Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS) and proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental and waste legislation, standards, and effective industry practices
