Position Title: Logistics Manager

Team and Location: STaR – Calgary, AB

Position Summary:

Reporting to VP Logistics and Terminal Operations, the Logistics Manager will be accountable for the oversight of all logistical and supporting scheduling functions for Parkland’s West Coast facility and terminal network, and responsible for the management of their corresponding Logistics team.

The Logistics Manager will work closely with their team of Schedulers and/or Analysts to effectively implement, execute, and support the commercial and supply activities of Parkland’s marketing, trading and supply teams within Supply, Trading and Refining. The successful candidate will collaborate with each internal department, as well as external customers and stakeholders, to ensure the safe and efficient movement of products by pipeline, rail, truck and marine.

The Logistics Manager will play a key role within Parkland, leading and developing their team, leading and supporting a continuous improvement framework, while contributing to the profitability of the Supply and Trading division and Parkland as a whole. The Logistics Manager will provide accurate, relevant, and timely information and analysis to divisional business leaders to enable them to evaluate results and use these facts when making future business decisions. The Logistics Manager will also analyze their supply chains and work cross functionally to find optimization and improvement strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance to respective Supply, Marketing and Trading teams, and direct reports for optimal fleet utilization to maintain margin basis, and protect bottom line for enterprise as a whole.
  • Create and implement creative business solutions.
  • Manage performance targets for direct reports, and related development plans by regularly providing mentorship, coaching and shaping of employee’s product and results.
  • Provide insight for contract agreements to ensure risks associated with Supply Chain business function are mitigated to an optimal level.
  • Directly support Trading team in effective freight negotiations for loaded product movements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, customers and vendors.
  • Collaboratively create and manage process to ensure compliance, risk mitigation, and efficiency across enterprise.
  • Laisse with all internal functional groups to ensure complete business process execution.
  • Responsible for managing single contributor, and group cohesion to enterprise vision and goals.
  • Sitting on Industry Focus Groups to participate with external stakeholders for creating a collective industry voice on important regulatory, technical, and going concern matters.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Responsible for month end activities including inventory balancing, accounting accruals, and ensuring Logistics Coordinators have closed their month end duties.
  • Support the development of Key Performance Indicators, benchmarking, analysis, and reporting; use KPI’s to drive performance within business unit teams.
  • Responsible for compliance with Parkland Operations Excellence Management Systems (POEMS), within business unit for all transportation, and product quality concerns.
  • Keen focus and drive in Operational Efficiency, and the reliable and safe delivery of products and services.
  • Overseeing movement of product through various methods of supply; postings truck liftings, keep dry’s, keep wet’s, ordering rail volume into truck terminals, truck diversions etc.
  • Managing Inventories; tracking inventory positions, nominating inventory transfers, communicating with marketing team about storage positions and available capacities, reporting month end positions to accounting
  • Monitor and manage pipeline allocations and nominations.
  • Support and oversee a team of Logistics Schedulers covering truck, rail and marine deliveries and liftings to Parkland Corp., owned, operated, leased, or contracted facilities, including Parkland’s refinery and terminals.
  • Work cross functionally to help optimize and support scheduling of resources around multiple constraints within the supply chain, terminal, system or facility; pro-actively take the lead to review and implement de-bottling opportunities.
  • Actively support/ provide, as required, vacation coverage, weekend on-call rotation within the team
  • Proactively support supply chain emergencies, and act as main point of escalation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support entire scheduling team, Supply team, Operations team, and Optimization teams with day to day activities as problems arise to find and implement creative solutions.
  • Coach and develop team members in their day to day activities.
  • Develop process improvements, socialize appropriately across all parties, and support or oversee management of change.

Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Mathematics or similar.

Five years’ experience in a Logistics role in the energy industry.

Three years’ experience in a Leadership role, would be an asset.

Strong understanding of trading systems, finance, processes, and internal controls.

Strong analytical capability: able to analyze data from multiple sources and compile information in an easy to understand format.

Strong problem-solving skills.

Strong computer skills and experience managing large volumes of data.

Advanced skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and MS Access are required.

Ability to negotiate successful outcomes (will be externally facing with pipeline and other operation analysts with our suppliers).

Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively with customers, both internally and externally.

Ability to understand, synthesise and extract insights from large amounts of data and market information.

Strong excel modeling skills and power point are an asset.

Strong written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to work well in cross-functional teams.

Self-motivated and proactive approach and work ethic.

Positive attitude, intellectual curiosity and a willingness to work in a team.

Must be detail oriented with the ability to multi-task with attention to accuracy.

Must be team player that possess the ability to adapt to a changing and fast paced work environment.

Ability to adjust to changing and conflicting demands, responsibilities, and issues.

Enthusiastic learner with an entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
