Job description: Reporting to the Director, Sustainability, the Manager, Corporate Sustainability is responsible for a team that supports Sheridan in developing vision, framework and strategies to support its evolving understanding of sustainability. Within this portfolio, the Manager works with stakeholders across Sheridan, particularly Capital Development & Facilities Management (CDFM), to shape initiatives in areas such as carbon mitigation, climate adaptation and resilience, biodiversity, transportation and mobility, equity and inclusion, well-being, and placemaking. The Manager works to increase the visibility of sustainability issues across the Sheridan community, and helps create opportunities for the community to increase its level of knowledge and contribute to sustainability initiatives. Sheridan strives to become the institutional model for how a 21st century organization embraces sustainability, and the Manager plays a crucial role in realizing this vision by establishing, supporting, and monitoring institutional policies, procedures and practices to foster an institutional culture defined by informed and responsible decision-making that reflects the crucial balance between economic, social and environmental priorities. The Manager develops and resources Sheridan’s greenhouse gas inventory and other mandatory and voluntary energy, carbon, waste, and other sustainability metrics reporting and has the responsibility for preparing and updating Association for the Advancement of Sustainability (AASHE) assessments, and building and maintaining Sheridan’s sustainability dashboards, social media and websites. As a subject matter expert on many facets of sustainability, the Manager provides support and guidance to departments across Sheridan and contributes to the development of standard and guideline documents to inform operational practices. The Manager will also collaborate with the Academic area and other departments based on Sheridan’s holistic approach to integration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework. The Manager promotes the work of the sustainability team and develops sustainability projects that create community engagement, leadership by example, and meaningful experiences for students, faculty and staff. This includes seeking out and leveraging opportunities to work with external partners such as municipalities, utility companies, neighbouring landowners, community members, and other institutions. Aligning with Sheridan’s “living laboratory” philosophy, the Manager’s projects encourage faculty and student participation and work to initiate multi-disciplinary research initiatives. The overarching goal is to propel Sheridan to the position of industry leader in operational and institutional sustainability.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Developing and implementing institutional sustainability plans in consultation with business unit managers and external partners/vendors to refine project plans from strategic concept through formal scope/budget, successfully tendering work packages, and completing project execution to support Sheridan’s sustainability objectives;
  • Establishing and monitoring policies, procedures and practices, serving as a subject matter expert and providing support across Sheridan to develop standard guideline documents;
  • Tracking and reporting performance of mandatory and voluntary energy, carbon, waste and other sustainability metrics to outside groups, including the provincial government and administrative agencies;
  • Engaging internal and external stakeholders in projects through co-operative education, part-time employment etc, and working with faculty staff and external partners to co-develop curriculum, certification and research opportunities supporting the professional and career development of a range of learners. Developing projects that engage with community partners (e.g. municipalities, utility companies, neighbouring land owners, community members, local businesses) and demonstrate sustainability leadership;
  • Building and maintaining Sheridan’s sustainability dashboards, social media, website, Insider and newsletter updates;
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • 4-year degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 5 years of progressive experience establishing and implementing business cases, plans and strategy for sustainability programs (equivalency will be considered)
  • Direct experience with public sector sustainability practices
  • Experience with carbon accounting
  • Familiarity with corporate and academic sustainability reporting frameworks, e.g. Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), Sustainability Tracking and Rating System (STARS), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), UN Sustainable Development Goals Implementation framework
  • Sound knowledge of provincial and federal sustainability initiative
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional (asset);
  • WELL Accredited Professional (asset)
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification (asset)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) (asset)

Campus Location: Trafalgar (may be assigned activities at any Sheridan campus) once normal campus operations resume. This position is currently working both remotely and on campus.
