Job Summary

The Manager Engineering is responsible for the oversight of inspection and maintenance of tracks, roadbed, and right way, in accordance with the sound engineering practices and approved railway standards, specifications, procedures, budget and CN’s operating plan.

Main Responsibilities

People and Safety

· Provide leadership to the Track Supervisors, Assistant Track Supervisors and hourly employees

· Support Maintenance of Way (MOW) employees, provide direction of employee performance and department objectives

· Offer coaching and counseling to subordinates and resolve grievances

· Build safety compliance and improve safety results through regular efficiency testing and safety walkabouts

· Provide positive and constructive feedback

· Manage activities related to derailment and disruptions in service, while working with transportation and mechanical to determine cause, prevention and service recovery

Inspection and planning

· Prepare capital program requirements

· Analyze and interpret track geometry and rail flaw detection reports to identify conditions requiring action to meet Engineering Track Standards

Working Conditions

The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires frequent) travel (75%) across the territory.

Requirements

Experience

· Minimum 10 years of railroad experience

· Minimum 6 years of track experience

· Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience

Education/Certification/Designation

· High School Diploma or GED

· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering*

*Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

· Knowledge of track structure, construction and maintenance, identifying track defects, and Operating Rules qualified

· Knowledge of Engineering track standards and operating measures

· Basic understanding of applicable collective agreements

· Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) including Track Inspection System (TIS), Systems, Applications and Products (SAP)
