Since 2012, we have invested more than $400 million in facilities, people, processes, and technology, making Halifax Shipyard one of the most modern and capable shipyards in North America. Over the next 30 years our shipbuilders will construct 20+ modern patrol ships and surface combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, the largest defence procurement in Canadian history. This year, we delivered the lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, the largest Navy ship built in Canada in 50 years and we’re just getting started. The second ship will be delivered in 2021.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer.

This is a permanent full-time role based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The primary language of work is English. Manufacturing Instructions (MI)and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are sets of detailed technical documents written to instruct the execution of repeatable build activities, ex. structural and outfit fabrication, welding instructions, equipment installation, cable pull, etc. The Manufacturing Engineer will support the development of an organizational framework for these production documents and the subsequent writing, editing, and maintenance of the documents. The Manufacturing Engineer will collaborate with key stakeholders and end users to ensure the format, detail, and scope meet the requirements of the business.

The function will be responsible for providing support to:

  • Standard Operating Procedures Development and Maintenance
  • Manufacturing Instructions Development and Maintenance
  • Alignment with ISI Quality Assurance
  • Alignment with other Manufacturing Engineering areas, including ISI Build Authority, Production Engineering, and Production Planning
  • Alignment with ISI Production

Qualifications:

  • Years or more experience in shipbuilding, manufacturing, or related area.
  • Strong technical literacy and technical writing skills required.
  • Strong oral communication skills required.
  • Strong skills in organizing and managing large number of tasks with varying priorities.
  • Good technical and business aptitude, fast learner, and effective problem solver.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Engineering or similar

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute the writing, editing, and maintenance activities for Standard Operating Procedures and Manufacturing Instructions.
  • Support the development of production operational documentation organizational structure.
  • Work closely with stakeholder department team members to understand their roles, requirements, and activities.
  • Department and function KPIs
  • Report progress to the Manager.
