Summary:
The overriding aim of this role is to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and driving existing improvement projects and initiatives. Other duties include acting as the technical interface between Engineering and Operations in order to better prepare manufacturing for production runs and to support new product launches at Mircom. This individual will take responsibility of several activities in relation to design and assembly and will be involved to various degrees in the following: design reviews, Bill of Material (BOM) management, testing of the sub-assemblies and assemblies, product release to manufacturing as well as intervening on the shop floor during pre- and full production runs.

Continuous Improvement
- Lead process improvement and continuous improvement team activities. Responsible to define productivity requirements.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement according to “Lean” and “Six Sigma” manufacturing practices.
- Lead the Operation Availability improvements site wide. Responsible and accountable for the sites short term and long term machine capacity planning process.
- Participates in the layered accountability meeting process on a daily basis.
- Goal to spend 80% of time on floor process improvement.
- Define and develop solutions to bottlenecks.
- Responsible for product flow through cell and cell design.
Design
- Collaborates with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers during the design phase; recommends and enforces Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles in design reviews;
- Determines how design decisions impact quality, cost and manufacturability (cost-benefit analysis);
- Participates & contributes to the choice of materials, manufacturing methods and the improvement of production tools;
- Assists Operations with the testing procedure based on the design (may include programing of the test equipment);
- Tracks workflow with assembly flow charts.
- Support NPI initiatives as required.
Manufacturing
- Responsible for elaborating and documenting testing plans as well as assembly drawings and procedures;
- Personally oversees the assembly of new products (1st offs) and coaches shop floor workers on the correct assembly procedure; liaises with product managers in doing so.
- Trains on the development of standard work and assists in the development of standard work as required.
- Periodically audits the assembly lines for conformance to procedures and instructions; Audit standard work (layered process audits)
- Provides technical assistance for production (problem solving while taking in consideration the unforeseen);
- Perform and/or support safety and customer audits.
- Works with the quality engineer to minimize defects and maximize yields of lines; Utilize Built In Quality processes to ensure product quality; Develop and implement error proofing processes where applicable. Develop and maintain process controls (via FMEA etc.). Respond immediately to product holds. Respond to ECOs. Provide the technical resource for SPC activities.
- Conducts work flow analysis and makes recommendations for improving material handling, shop layout, and process design for flow.
- Responsible for managing the Bill Of Materials (BOM) with respect to the following:
- Ensuring its sufficient completeness and accuracy for production runs
- Facilitates cross-functional input on the BOM
- Inherits the BOM from engineering and maps it to a full manufacturing BOM
- Ensures BOM is updated according to approved engineering change orders
- Carries out parts usage and change impact analysis
- Optimizes the BOM in terms of component costs, component obsolescence etc.
- Raises and resolves issues related to BOMs as early as possible in the product lifecycle
- Creates Engineering Change Orders in relation to manufacturing needs;
- Keeps up to date of and is involved with suggesting and implementing ISO procedures relating to manufacturing operations;
Requirements and Skills:
- Engineering degree or equivalent in a relevant field (ex: mechanical, electrical);
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the electronic industry; Ideally an expert in test / programming, SMT, PCBA, wave solder and CNC Punch Press
- Experience of participation in a product development team from inception to manufacturing and launch
- Experience in taking at least one project through manufacturing and launch;
- Expertise in “Design for Manufacturing” techniques;
- Working knowledge of “Lean Manufacturing” techniques required; Lean Certification Required; In depth knowledge of change management techniques.
- Excellent planning and organization skills;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Tenacious personality that pursues issues until they are resolved;
- Remains calm under pressure and can resolve conflicts with win-win scenarios;
- Logical deductive reasoning capabilities for root cause analysis;
- Working knowledge of manufacturing related software;
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with changing priorities;
