Responsibilities

Under the supervision of program manager, the incumbent is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of clients participating in various addictions related programs in the NSH such as Inpatient Withdrawal Management. The Nurse Rehabilitation Counselor utilizes a harm reduction approach in the overall facilitation of individual client recovery plans. The Nurse Rehabilitation Counselor coordinates all aspects of client care including; admission interview and assessment, client education, clinical assessments, obtaining and processing urine drug screens and discharge planning as required. The successful candidate will provide ongoing education sessions to clients, community agencies and groups; and liaise with treatment partners such as pharmacists, physicians, public health, mental health, emergency departments, social and correctional services and other agencies. The Nurse Rehabilitation Counselor, as part of the multi-disciplinary team will participate on internal and external committees and community partnerships. Completion of identified educational courses such as fundamental concepts in addiction, concurrent disorders, opioid substitution treatment, suicide risk assessment and relapse prevention will be required. Hours of work vary among different program areas.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Registration with Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN)
  • Current CPR
  • One year of Mental Health & Addictions experience in the last five years
  • If there are no applicants with one year experience, applicants with six months MHA experience will be evaluated;
  • If there are no applicants with six months experiences, applicants with no MHA experience will be evaluated.
  • Experience, knowledge and respect regarding the principles of a harm reduction, as well as a working knowledge of the dynamics of addiction
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills along with excellent problem-solving and presentation skills
  • Basic Computer Literacy skills and willingness to learn ASSIST/Meditech programs
  • Experience in interviewing, counseling and teaching individuals and groups health concepts
  • A well-developed awareness of community resources. Ability to be culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgmental, patient, and understanding
  • Exceptional skills in non-violent crisis intervention and conflict resolution, current CPI
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment and also effectively within an interdisciplinary team
  • Working knowledge and proficiency with a variety of computer software and programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality and privacy of NSHA patients and clients
  • Annually access the training and education on patient, client and personal safety made available by NSHA
  • The successful applicant will have a commitment to the mission and values of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Salary Information

Nurse Rehabilitation Counselor (NUR001):

$35.04 – $41.41 hourly

($42.86 hourly with 25 years of RN experience).
