Humber Applied Research & Innovation helps faculty and student research teams collaborate with industry and community partners in order to help solve specific problems. Whether it’s building a prototype, or coding a new business’s website, or discovering the most efficient method for a company to reach its clients – a team of student research assistants works with a faculty member and industry or community partners to create and innovate. Applied Research & Innovation works with faculty and students in all six of Humber’s faculties to provide opportunities for students to apply classroom skills towards measureable and practical outcomes.

Position Title: Outreach Worker – Research Study Project
Status: Part-time Contract
Hours: 7 hours/ week

Salary: Band 8 (Min $23.66 Max $36.41)

What you will do:

Role Profile
The Outreach workers will be responsible for assisting with confidential outreach and administrative activities for a research study on affordable housing in South Etobicoke, and supporting a wide range of research projects and initiatives. Outreach workers have previous professional experience in community development, outreach and research, and so will prove to be conscious of equity-based, community outreach best practices. Having insights and first-hand knowledge of what effective engagement is with marginalized groups is a qualification, how advocacy works on the ground, and how change is achieved through groups, beyond setbacks. You will be working on a research study out of Humber College, funded through the College and Community Innovation Program – College and Community Social Innovation Fund, by The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) with Humber College and the community partner, LAMP Community Health Centre. This is a three-year project, and there is the possibility of extension beyond the first year.

What you bring to the role:

Education:

  • The successful candidate will have a 3-year degree in social service worker, community development, community services, or social services.

Experience:
The successful candidate will have 2 years of community outreach, community engagement and/or development work experience. In addition, the successful candidate will have:

  • Experience working with marginalized and equity seeking groups;
  • Experience or strong interest in working with residents of Toronto;
  • Fluency in other languages is an asset (particularly Russian, Albanian, Polish, Ukrainian, Spanish);
  • Experience working with people from various cultural, ethnic, socio-economic and developmental backgrounds;
  • Experience in research processes an asset or willing to learn – such as data gathering; data coding & analysis.
