About us:
South Huron Hospital Association (SHHA) serves the Municipality of South Huron and its adjacent communities-a catchment area of approximately 19,000 residents. The hospital is located in the village of Exeter, approximately 30 minutes north of London, and provides 24/7 emergency services in addition to acute, rehabilitation and complex continuing care inpatient services and various diagnostic and ambulatory services. Our staff also supports family practice and walk-in care at the South Huron Medical Centre. As a small rural hospital, we cherish the relationship we have with our community and pledge uncompromising standards to those we serve.

Position Description:
The Patient Care Manager works collaboratively to organize and support the work of the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for staff and to create exceptional patient and family experiences while providing safe, quality care.

Responsibilities include supporting structure and process standards, including policies and procedures and unit goals and objectives while ensuring compliance with legislative and professional standards.

The role includes creating and maintaining a supportive environment for patients and staff, providing leadership, facilitating staff and team development, managing budgets and material resources, and facilitating quality improvement initiatives.

As a dynamic leader, the Patient Care Manager demonstrates creativity, flexibility and innovation and employs transformational leadership skills in developing, implementing, and evaluating effective and efficient unit processes and patient- and family-centred care practices.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • A minimum of five (5) years clinical experience (Emergency Nursing experience an asset) and advanced knowledge of current trends in nursing and healthcare, including appreciation of unique challenges and opportunities leading in a small rural hospital.
  • A minimum of two (2) years management / supervisory experience in a unionized, healthcare environment.
  • Courses in project management, process optimization, leadership and/or healthcare administration an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles of adult education and teaching/learning principles; able to coach, develop, and grow team members
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal, communication, team-building, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to develop positive working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership skills including strong financial (budgeting & capital planning), human resource, labour relations, quality improvement, change management, and utilization management skills.
  • Important qualifying assets include exposure and familiarity with Patient Safety & Risk Management, Patient Relations, Pharmacy, Allied Health, Accreditation, Infection Prevention & Control, Occupational Health, Emergency Management and Disaster/Pandemic Preparedness, Health Ethics, Professional Practice, and Clinical Informatics.
  • Experience supervising employees within a unionized environment, including, scheduling, performance development and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Ability to respond to a large number of simultaneous/competing demands from patients, families, staff, physicians, and other programs and departments.
  • A track record of rational decision making as well as creativity and innovation in resolving difficult issues.
  • Detail-oriented. Able to conduct analytical work and accurately complete staff/schedule plans in alignment with collective agreement provisions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer software including: MS Office suite, Cerner, CritiCall, etc.
  • Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard.
  • Must be able to work on-call periodically, as required by SHHA’s Leader On-Call Program.
  • Must be able to attend meetings and functions after normal business hours from time to time, as required.
  • Current Police Check/Vulnerable Sector Screen and immunization status required upon hire.
