We currently have a Regular Full-time opportunity for a Payroll Manager in the Finance Department, located at the St John’s Rehab Campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekdays: Days, 8 hrs shifts, As per schedule; Flexibility Required

The Finance department of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has an opening for the role of Payroll Manager. This position is responsible for leading a team of 11 (union and non union) staff and providing full service payroll to over 9,000 staff. The successful candidate must be a self-starter with strong interpersonal and communication skills and comfortable working in a fast-paced and time sensitive environment. Priority will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in managing end to end payroll in a large organization with multiple union agreements.

Summary of Duties:

The Payroll Manager will be responsible for all aspects of administering and processing payroll for union and non-union staff while maintaining strong internal controls and confidentiality including:

  • Ensuring accurate/timely processing of bi-weekly and monthly payroll
  • Timely review and submission of statutory remittances
  • Resolving payroll related issues and implementing payroll related initiatives by working collaboratively with other teams (e.g. Human Resources, Finance, software vendor, etc.)
  • Supporting significant implementation/upgrade projects through informing solution design, developing testing plans, data validation and leading change management
  • Developing payroll reporting (internal and external)
  • Reviewing existing policies and procedures to identify, design and implement improvements which support:
  • data integrity
  • seamless processing
  • increased automation and efficiency
  • improved customer service
  • Implementing and conducting payroll data quality reviews/audits
  • Preparing year-end audit schedules and report to auditors during interim and annual financial and external agency audits
  • Ensuring corporate and departmental policies and procedures are maintained, updated and adhered to
  • Collaborating with other hospitals to enable best practices

Qualification & Skills:

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years payroll management experience within a full cycle payroll environment at a large organization (healthcare and experience in a unionized environment preferred)
  • Completion of a post-secondary degree program (Business Administration, Accounting or Finance is preferred) coupled with successful completion of Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification
  • Proficient knowledge of top tier payroll, time and attendance and HCM software systems
  • Experience leading, or having a significant role in major implementation/upgrade projects
  • Demonstrated leadership with identifying, designing and implementing process improvements
  • Collaborative team player with superior influencing skills, who can build relationships easily to move initiatives forward
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including ability to communicate technical requirements to non-technical users in a simple manner
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Able to work in a fast paced, team environment, multi-tasking between many priorities
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and adaptable
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel) and Access
  • Flexibility to work off-hours in time sensitive situations

Preferred but not mandatory requirements:

  • Knowledge of Empath payroll system
  • Hospital and/or healthcare experience
