The Project Manager – Road Construction is an important part of a vibrant team at Lafarge, responsible for the successful project management of all Road Construction projects in the Northern Alberta region. This responsibility is accomplished by providing leadership and mentorship to the project team. As a Project Manager – Road Construction, you will be responsible for forecasting monthly cash flow to ensure that all company and reporting requirements are met including scheduling and forecasting, financial reporting and health & safety. This position is based in Edmonton, but may require flexibility to work in other locations in Alberta.

Responsibilities

As a Project Manager – Road Construction you will be responsible for:

Safety Leadership

  • Lead the business with the utmost focus on health & safety
  • Proactively implement Lafarge best practices, engage with all levels of employees in this regard and ensure that personnel are actively seeking out real time solutions to identified risks
  • Accountable for Health & Safety of all employees and subcontractors

Management and Human Resources

  • Manage all project staff and subcontractors
  • Provide support and mentoring for personnel on projects
  • Provide leadership and direction to Superintendents, Foreman, field crews, consultants, subcontractors

Technical Operations

  • Assist with, and review, tenders and proposals
  • Responsible for all environmental aspects on projects
  • Assign personnel to projects in collaboration with Superintendents
  • Oversee the allocation of people and equipment in collaboration with Superintendents
  • Responsible for timely monthly progress reports for invoicing and submits to accounting
  • Attend and participate in weekly site meetings to ensure compliance to contract specifications submitted scheduling and quality standards
  • Provide project support in resolving contractual disputes
  • In conjunction with management, accountable for managing the project budget
  • Administer subcontract agreements and ensure compliance
  • Procurement of materials and payment of invoices
  • Conduct pre-construction meetings with all pertinent parties
  • Identify any sub-contractors that are restricted (Red/Amber) in Avetta and work with Operations/Contract Admin to rectify the restriction
  • Creation of RFIs
  • Direct liaison with owner/consultant and field
  • Solicit pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Acquire appropriate documentation for the tender / proposal

Specific Accountabilities

  • Develop long-term relationships with clients
  • May be required to manage multiple projects at one time
  • Forecasting monthly cash flow to ensure that all company and reporting requirements are met including scheduling and forecasting, financial reporting and health & safety
  • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates, bids and proposals used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, scheduling work and determining cost effectiveness; lay out and traffic control plans with rentals, vendors or subcontractors
  • Responsible for providing additional pricing, change orders, extra work orders
  • Track the overall progression of work
  • Responsible and accountable for tracking and reporting on overall project costs
  • Create and oversee the project schedule
  • Consult with clients, vendors, subcontractors or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates, organize and manage contracts and resolve issues.
  • Provide project status reports to operations management.
  • Oversee subcontractor activities
  • Effectively communicate with all levels of internal and external stakeholders

Relationship with Other Jobs:

  • This position reports to the Operations Manager

Qualifications

Education:

  • Engineering degree or diploma (CET, EIT, P.Eng) is preferred; or a minimum of 5 – 7 years’ related hands on road construction, field based experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience and Skill Set:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret plans and specifications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
  • Proven experience leading and motivating multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills to be able to interact with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to effectively present information in writing, and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply mathematical and accounting concepts
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Computer proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Use of logic and reasoning to be able to identify strengths and weaknesses and alternate solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Ability to work extended hours as required (evenings, weekends)
