Alberta is covered by roughly 35 million hectares of forest. Alberta’s Forestry Division supports a policy of sustainable forest management designed to maintain a healthy forest able to sustain itself ecologically while providing for society’s economic, social, recreational and spiritual needs and values.

Role

Are you passionate about ensuring the sustainability of the forest resource now and into the future? Do you enjoy flexing your math skills and quantifying forest growth and yield? Can you bring your understanding of existing policy and work with stakeholders to solve complex problems? Are you interested in building the practice of forest growth and yield forward as technologies evolve?

Accurate estimation of forest growth and timber yield is crucial to ensure sustainable harvest levels, and the ecological, economic and social factors that accompany such a forest management paradigm.

Key responsibilities include conducting and reviewing forest growth and timber yield analyses for forestlands across the province as well as determining the acceptability of annual harvest levels proposed by companies. Work is completed within the regulatory framework of the Ministry, as well as within related policies and procedures, and often requires creative problem solving to ensure that all needs are met.

The position is also responsible for providing unique analytical expertise, support and advice to technical and professional industry representatives, company-contracted consultants and government staff in the area of forest growth and yield.

As technologies evolve, the position must be able to assess the impact of new technologies on current practice and make recommendations to improve both the policy and practice of quantifying forest growth and yield.

This is a position that requires a combination of robust technical/analytical skills, writing abilities and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard for this Role:

  • A 4 year degree (Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Management from an accredited university, or equivalent)
  • At least 4 years of related experience (data management, forest management, forest mensuration, sampling design, statistical analysis, yield estimation, regression analysis, growth modeling, reforestation standards, forest resource analysis or related)

Equivalencies for Minimum Recruitment Standards will be considered

Qualifications:

  • A Master of Science Degree in Forest Biometrics from an accredited university (or equivalent) would be considered an asset
  • Member of the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals, or eligible for membership
  • Working knowledge of all legislation, policies and standards that impact public and forestland management in Alberta
  • Knowledge of timber supply analysis, silviculture, forest ecology, reforestation, vegetation inventories, and forest management principles
  • Advanced programming skills for modelling and data management using statistical software (e.g. SAS, R, ArcGIS).

Salary

2,818.88 to $3,640.79 bi-weekly. ($73,572 to $95,024 per year)

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time position. The standard hours of work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This position is expected to work relatively independently with little to no travel required.

This position reports to the Edmonton unit in the J. G. O’Donoghue Building, but operating out of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development offices across Alberta will be considered as capacity allows.

The short-listed candidates may be required to pass a hands-on assessment gauging writing proficiency.
