LANGLEY
WSP’s Langley laboratory has recently been upgraded and modernized to be one of Canada’s leading facilities for evaluation of concrete, aggregates, soils, metallurgical materials, and asphalt pavements.
Reporting to the Materials Laboratory Group Leader, the work will be conducted primarily in the laboratory with some occasional field work requirements, depending on project demands. The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge in testing concrete, aggregates, soils, and asphalt pavements in accordance with CSA and ASTM Standards.
A significant portion of the work will be higher level testing to support engineers in our Materials Group. Duties that the successful candidate will be responsible for include, but is not limited to:
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing test programs in accordance with procedures outlined per CSA, ASTM, and US Army Corps of Engineers test standards;
- Supporting professional staff in the preparation and testing of concrete trial mixes;
- Supporting professional staff in testing programs to assess the thermal properties of concrete;
- Conducting routine and advanced testing of concrete, aggregate, soils, and asphalt pavement properties;
- Maintaining records, and completion of regular calibration and proficiency testing in compliance with requirements for certification with CCIL;
- Prepare laboratory test reports, and field review reports;
- Follow and abide by WSP’s health and safety policy and
- Conducting routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
The successful candidate must also:
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Be proficient in Microsoft office suite of software;
- Have a minimum of 5 to 10 years of laboratory testing experience, preferably in a senior role or leadership capacity;
- Candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply and would be considered for a junior or intermediate position that is commensurate with their experience.
- Be able to pass the exam for, and continually maintain certification status, as a CCIL-certified construction materials laboratory technician throughout duration of employment;
- Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s license (with a clean driver’s abstract) and be able to travel to project sites, when required;
- Be able to lift and carry equipment or materials weighing up to 50 lbs without assistance;
- Be adaptable to changing work environment;
- Be a motivated, self-starter who can work well independently or with a team;
- Be able to successfully pass a physical demands analysis test; and
- Be able to successfully pass a screening test for illicit drugs and alcohol
QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology;
- Be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a Certified Technician or as an Applied Science Technologist in British Columbia;
- Knowledgeable regarding testing of metallurgical materials (i.e. steel yield strength, Charpy V-notch impact, hardness, etc.).
