About the Role
The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS) called Alternative Database Technologies. Alternative Database Technologies is responsible for database infrastructure architecture and operation support to teams using various cloud based and on-prem database platforms. The successful candidate will have a passion for database related technologies and is a proven fast learner. This is an opportunity for someone who is expert in data warehouse technologies, preferably in Snowflake, Redshift. A minimum of 7+ year of experience in Information Technology is required as well as experience in relational and non-relational database technologies such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, Redshift, MySQL, Graph DBs and Time series.
This role requires Canadian Enhanced Reliability Security clearance [a minimum of 5 years of consecutive residency in Canada].
What will you do?
- Setup, deploy and maintain snowflake cloud platform and administration, including but not limited to perform user & role management in Snowflake, backup/restore etc.
- Monitor the cost/credit consumption reports and take the effective measures for cost optimization
- Participate in projects throughout the entire project lifecycle, and define, manage, and track project deliverables using defined technologies
- Maintain up-to-date documentation and procedures for Snowflake and other supported database platforms
- Keep up to date on current and upcoming technology innovations for use within Sunlife
- Develop scripts to support the database operations on Linux, Unix or cloud-based platforms
- Support project development following documented standards, policies and procedures (Change Management Process)
- Evaluate functionality and features within related database products, suggest process improvements and innovative solutions
- Contribute and participate in continuous improvement and efficiency ideas in Snowflake administrations via DevOps
What need to succeed:
- University degree in Computer Science or related information technology degree/diploma
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in Snowflake administration/development
- 3+ years of experience in cloud native database technologies, i.e.: AWS Redshift, databricks, Oracle ADW and other
- 3+ years of experience working with multiple platforms and types of data repositories (Relational, NoSQL, Datawarehouse, OLAP, OLTP etc.)
- Proven Linux/Unix experiences, including expert shell scripting experiences
- Experience/familiarity with the operations and maintenance of production database systems
- Understanding and explaining of schema design (relational and data warehouse), index design, operation optimization and query plans
- Experienced in performance tuning, query optimization, client/server connectivity, and database consistency checks using different utilities
- Expertise in snapshot, import/export, database optimization and explanation plans
- Involved in designing, developing, testing and rolling out of complex enterprise applications to completion in terms of Database using different project development models like: SDLC, Agile, SCRUM etc.
- Problem solving, technical and conceptual skills with experience to lead technical discussions and self manage workloads
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask efficiently
- Ability to contribute solutions that meet or exceed business requirements
Preferred Skills:
- SnowPro Advanced certifications, i.e.: SnowPro Advanced Administrator etc.
- Developer background or experience working closely with development teams
- Data Modeler or schema design experience
- Experiences in any of the NoSQL (DynamoDB, Neptune or other), Redshift, MySQL, Oracle or SQL Server
- Understanding or experience working with Cloudwatch, Cloudtrail, AWS Config, AWS Backup and/or AWS DMS
- CloudFormation, Glue and/or Lambda scripting experience
- Understanding or experience with DevOps or Agile methodologies
- Experience with Security Architecture(s)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
