Reporting to the Dean, the Sessional Instructor provides instruction to students in the B.Ed. Program at Ontario Tech University.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above. In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing mobile devices and wireless connectivity, the successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of a dynamic, new, and enhanced pre-service teacher education program.

The position requires a big thinker with creative approaches to course instruction, and an evidence-based approach in the preparation, implementation, and assessment of course material and assignments. The position requires intensive collaboration with other faculty in order to create a cohesive and integrated Bachelor of Education program. The successful candidate will bring passion for mathematics education, an awareness of different pedagogical approaches and perspectives, and a dedication to personal growth and learning to the faculty. They will co-plan and prepare with other instructors, implement and grade course material and assignments, and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session. In addition, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with other mathematics education researchers and instructors on the planning and integration of mathematics-related courses and initiatives for I/S teacher candidate growth and development.

Participation in mathematics education scholarly or professional communities in and beyond Ontario will be an asset.

This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellent teaching contributions with a proven aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level. Required Skills

  • Evidence of successful teaching, including via appropriately challenging inquiry- or problem-based lessons, at the pre-service and/or grades 7 to 12 levels;
  • A proven commitment to providing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies;
  • Evidence of the integration of theories of learning/teaching into instructional practice, including task design and development;
  • Evidence of an ability to critically reflect on one’s own professional practice and adapt practices as needed;
  • Evidence of an ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment;
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to maintain effective relationships with a range of faculty, staff and students;
  • Evidence of teaching that fosters reflection, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, problem solving and independence;
  • Openness to new and diverse perspectives for the learning and teaching of mathematics;
  • Demonstrated evidence of understanding of how (pre-service) teachers learn and develop;
  • Knowledge of grades 7 to 12 mathematics education in the Ontario context;
  • Demonstrates an understanding of core content within the OCT accreditation requirements;
  • Evidence of a well-grounded understanding of curricular and pedagogical design, educational research, and assessment;
  • Evidence of integration of digital technologies with instructional practice.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or area of study related to mathematics is required;
  • A Master’s degree in education and / or mathematics is required;
  • A member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers is an asset;
  • A PhD in education or a related relevant field of study is an asset.

Required Experience

  • Successful teaching within the grades 7 to 12 classroom context;
  • Successful infusion of technologies in practice as purposeful teaching tools for, as, and of mathematics learning in the classroom;
  • Demonstrated evidence-based, or research-informed practice;
  • Successful teaching experience in a pre-service teacher education program is an asset;
  • Experience working within an LMS is an asset;
  • Experience teaching in a virtual environment is an asset.

Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.
