The Mathematics Department at WKGS is a vibrant, exciting place to work and a place for all students to develop their Maths skills in order to achieve their best in this subject. Staff work in a suite of rooms and are a hard-working team who offer drop-in support sessions alongside an array of exciting maths-based clubs and activities at lunchtimes in the department. Staff promote thinking skills and confidence in this subject and as a result, the popularity in the subject at A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics has grown significantly. At GCSE, the department has had great success at the Tier 3 AQA Algebra exam, and the number of entrants for the Further Mathematics GCSE has increased.

Students follow a three-year KS4 programme at WKGS, and the vast majority of pupils are entered at the Higher Tier for Edexcel Mathematics. At Key Stage 5, the A-level Edexcel course is followed in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and classes are usually shared between two teachers, with topics being allocated according to their area of speciality.

At Key Stage 3, a programme of Maths Mastery is followed using a variety of practical and visual resources, and staff are committed to improving the mastery of the rules of number and mathematics in order to promote confidence and resilience in the subject.

Students are encouraged to engage in activities outside of the classroom and take part in the UKMT team and individual challenges and MEM challenges, plus university quiz competitions.
