About Us

The Department of Western Technology Services (WTS) is a central source committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. WTS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western’s faculties and administrative units to leverage centrally-supported technology solutions and services where appropriate.

The WTS On-site Technology Support Team is responsible for providing a broad range of1st and 2nd level technical support to Western Faculties and Support Units.

Responsibilities

As a member of the On-site Technology Support Team, the Technology Support Specialist will be accountable for:

  • the configuration, support and maintenance of assigned units’ (clients’) network of workstations
  • the configuration and installation of software needed by the client
  • ensuring appropriate security, backup and recovery procedures are implemented and
  • consulting with the client on planning and installing upgrades and changes.

The Technology Support Specialist will also support mobile and portable devices. In this role, the successful candidate acts as a liaison between the client and WTS to ensure effective and timely communication, and to ensure that appropriate WTS resources are solicited to assist with the client’s facilities as needed. The role will direct project work as assigned by the Team Leader and the Associate Director of Client Support.

Qualifications

Education:

  • College diploma in an information technology field or a university degree with a minor in an information technology field
  • Relevant certifications in Information Technology subjects (ex: A+ certification, Microsoft Certified Professional, etc.) preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of current computer support experience including a variety of operating system software, hardware, application software, and networking experience using workstations, laptops, mobile devices, and servers.
  • Previous technical support experience with Western’s major WTS services and applications is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users from internal contacts up to senior management
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments and adapt efficiently to emerging priorities
  • Ability to apply new knowledge and skills to practical use on the job and further learning through experience in practicing new approaches and behaviors
  • Critical thinking and discernment to assess and scope areas for improvement and an ability to offer creative solutions
  • Ability to work independently on tasks and to successfully manage multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and make small presentations to colleagues and clients
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and differentiate the symptoms and root causes of every day, defined technical problems
  • Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service directly and indirectly to satisfy those expectations
  • Application of project management best practices as defined by the unit
  • Knowledge of computer system administration, including computer networks, operating systems, and application software
  • Able to write clear, concise procedural documentation
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments and key business partners
